End of Life Doula Death Walker

What is an End of Life Doula

End of Life Doulas are also known as Death Walkers, Death Doulas, Death Midwifes, Soul Doulas,  Transition Guides, Soul Walkers and End of Life Guides.

An end-of-life doula is a support person who provides non-medical, non-judgmental, support to those nearing the end of life. Death Doulas support the friends and family of the elderly, dying, or recently dead. An end-of-life doula educates and empowers individuals to make decisions on their own end-of-life care and final burial or funeral arrangements.

End-of-life doulas provide information to the dying and their family, to help them become familiar with the normal and natural stages of dying. They help reduce fear and anxiety around the process. They support the dying without any preconceived notions of what dying should look like. It's a Doula's job not to inject their own meaning of death to a family but to help a dying person and their loved ones come to their own conclusions. A death doula is not there to tell a dying individual the “right” or “best” way to die,  but to help the dying make their own decisions after learning about their options.

An end-of-life doula doesn't impose specific spiritual, religious or personal beliefs onto the dying.  Doula's are there to serve as an active listener so the dying and their family can evaluate their spiritual or religious thoughts on death and burial and construct a personalized plan for the dying. Death doula do not push or try to “sell” any specific philosophy of death. Doula's are only a mediator, supporter, or compassionate listener, while the dying considers their life legacy and what it means to die.

"Most of us don’t know how to die. It is not something we have rehearsed or practiced. We have a mind full of ideas about what will happen but very little if any experience with the process. We need to have someone who knows, guides, teaches, and reassures us..."

Soul Gate Service's

End of Life Doula

My name is Azariea, I am the founder of Soul Gate Services. At 31,  I was diagnosed with cancer, my whole life flashed before my eyes. I was terrified and felt I didn't have anyone to talk to about my fear of facing the possibility of death. In my mind, I'd always been there for others, but others didn't know how to be there for me during that time of need. I realized it wasn't because they didn't want to be there, but that they didn't know how to be there. The subject of death has been taboo in American culture.

Unfortunately many don't plan for death until we are given the awakening that we need to.  Most of the time family's are stuck mourning the loss of a loved one while having to juggle managing the arrangements to honor them, unfortunately a lot of time those last minute arrangements made are not exactly what the deceased had in mind. Studies show, less than 20% of people die, the way they'd like to. Being honored the way they'd dream to be.

As someone who has always been there for others during death of family members, friends and even pets, I was referenced as a death doula and at the time I didn't even know what that was. My research into death doula work led me to my INELDA certification. During the training I learned that not only was death doula work important, it was essential, and filled many holes within the "death industry".

During my journey with cancer I faced my fear of dying and death, and through the certification course I eventually came to see death as a beautiful experience that can be carefully crafted to meet every clients final needs and desires so that everyone can die with dignity and grace the way they want to. No one should feel alone when going through this process, or unable to talk about it, because I didn't have someone to talk to, I decided I would be that someone for others. End - of - life doulas provide practical, emotional and spiritual support for those facing terminal illnesses, and those who love and care for them that are left to make the choices on their behalf.

My Values as an End of Life Doula

Prioritize the Needs of Dying

I prioritize the needs of the dying, even if they aren't paying the bill. It's important that they are the primary focus. Everything else comes after. BY understanding the needs of the dying and by giving them an open ear to someone who can help with plans, we can ensure they pass with dignity and grace.

Be Judgement Free

Death is something every living thing is condemned to from the moment of birth. As a doula I work with all cultures, races, sexualities, and genders. Culture effects the dying's wishes and as a doula I promise to always giving 100% to being non discrimitive so I can best support the client.

Be a Compassionate Listener

I promise to always listen to the client(s) needs and to never impose my own beliefs. To hear what they need to say, and to be a safe listener. To listen carefully and to listen openly without judgement. To be supportive, kind and caring.

Explore Meaning

Questioning the meaning of life is something those facing death do. Erik Erikson, a psychologist, characterized the last stage of some ones life as "integrity versus Despair". Helping the client reach a sense of fulfillment is something I am personally committed to.
